Three Godwin "Pugin" Islamic Knott Antique Encaustic Tiles
Three exquisite 6-inch encaustic tiles featuring a sophisticated interlocking geometric knot, a hallmark of the Gothic Revival movement.
Designed by the legendary A.W.N. Pugin and manufactured by the renowned William Godwin of Lugwardine, these tiles represent the pinnacle of Victorian craftsmanship.
The pattern utilizes a classic "interlace" or "Islamic knot" motif—an 8-point star surrounded by a secondary geometric border. This design was specifically intended to evoke the spiritual geometry found in 13th-century cathedral flooring.
Dimensions: 6" x 6" (approx. 15cm x 15cm).
Condition & Character
These are genuine reclaimed Victorian tiles. Each piece carries a unique "living" patina, featuring minor surface pitting and softened edges that only over a century of history can provide.
The rich, matte finish of the clay offers a tactile warmth that modern ceramic prints cannot replicate. The tile on the left shows some surface "scumming" or salt efflorescence, which is common in reclaimed tiles. This can often be cleaned with a specialized tile restorer or a mild acid-based cleaner.
