Product Details

A rare and charming multi-pose study by the renowned St Ives artist Hyman Segal, capturing the fluid, "liquid" grace of the domestic cat.

This piece is a classic example of Segal’s "Cat Studies," featuring five distinct poses of a cat in various states of movement and repose.

Executed with his signature economy of line, the sketch demonstrates Segal's mastery of the charcoal/ink medium using bold, sweeping strokes to convey form, muscle, and personality without the need for intricate detail.

The natural aging of the paper (patina) adds a warm, vintage character to the piece, emphasizing its mid-20th-century origin.

Dimensions:

Height: 31cm

Width: 27cm

Depth: 2.5cm

About the Artist

Hyman Segal (R.B.A.) was a pillar of the British post-war art scene. After serving in Africa during WWII, he settled in St Ives, Cornwall, in 1946, becoming a founding member of the prestigious Penwith Society of Arts alongside legends like Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson.

Segal was famously devoted to the feline population of St Ives, at one point even campaigning for a "Cat Hostel" in the town. His cat drawings became so iconic that one was chosen as the permanent logo for The Cat Gallery in York.
