Antique Chinese Bronze Laozi Water Buffalo Incense Burner
This late Qing Dynasty to Republic period (c. 1850–1940) bronze censer depicts the legendary philosopher Laozi, the founder of Taoism, on his journey to the West.
According to tradition, Laozi chose to ride a water buffalo, a symbol of patience and humility, as he left China to transmit the wisdom of the Tao Te Ching.
Standing at 4 inches high, the two-piece vessel is expertly cast, featuring a hollow buffalo body and a removable lid that functions as the rider and saddle.
Condition Note: The figure’s hand posture suggests he may have originally held a flute or a scroll, which is now missing. This is a common occurrence with antique bronzes where small, separate accessories were lost over decades of use.
