19th Century Grand Tour Bronze of "Perseus Triumphant" After Antonio Canova
This exquisite patinated bronze figure depicts the Greek hero Perseus in the immediate aftermath of his victory over the Gorgon, Medusa.
This bronze is a 19th-century Grand Tour reduction of Antonio Canova’s famous neoclassical masterpiece, Perseus Triumphant (c. 1800), the original of which resides in the Vatican Museums.
He wears the Petasos (winged helmet of invisibility) and Talaria (winged sandals) gifted by Hermes.
In his right hand, he holds remnants of the "Harpe" (the curved sword or scythe), while his left arm supports a heavy chlamys (cloak) as he displays what would have been the severed head of Medusa.
